Dear Grassroots Rose,
When do you know it’s your heart and guidance speaking to you and not something or someone else?
And how do you know for sure?

I need to know,
Is it my heart?

Dear One,

As strange as this may sound, you know when you know. You know when you have to leave that job, leave that lover, travel to that country, move to the new city, cut your hair, go back to school. You just know. And what does that knowing look like? It can look like an uncontrollable smile when you think about this guidance. It can look like a surge of positive energy rushing up and through your body. It can look like a leaping up and an inner excitement at the thought. It can look like a knowing that everything is going to be all right if you make this choice. It is a stepping out and a trying, even when you don’t know what the result is going to be, but doing it anyway because you just can’t not do it. Something wakes you up in the middle of the night, something calls to you in your dream life, and something keeps showing up in random synchronicities. It is this inner guidance and heart that is this something that you simply can’t keep quiet. Heart and guidance show up in the quiet of the morning or in the dead of the night, as you are daydreaming and as you are imagining. You just know it. You just know.

And how do you know if it is something or someone else? You know if you are seeking his or her approval on that vision and that desire; when you are looking for someone else to validate your choice. When it’s heart and inner guidance, you receive approval from something inside you. Many times, this may not be fully understood by those who you would normally seek approval from. But when it’s heart and guidance, it is that part of you that says, “Yes, this is my unfolding, this is my time. I’m ready for this next step. I’m ready to call back or call to this next part of my soul, of my self.”

Lastly, dear one, it takes practice. You must practice listening to your heart and your guidance first thing when you wake up and right before you go to bed. You must practice checking in with how you are feeling throughout the day. Make time to ask yourself, what do I need now? What do I long for now? What am I wishing for right now? What is calling for me now? You can practice listening through journaling, listening through meditation, listening through long walks, listening through oracle cards, listening through prayer, listening through sitting in nature and listening through following small inner nudges like buying yourself a single rose, treating yourself to a walk in the park, or calling that old friend you haven’t seen in a while. If you practice listening for your heart, invite her to sit with you and to be with you, she will show up. You will know when it is her and she will have plenty to say.
